Lions eat Bulldogs and Blues in foot season opener

Toodyay Football Club May 2024 Update
by Patrick Thompson

THE SEASON opener for the Toodyay Football Club was a success with both league and reserves recording two wins from two games.

First up was an away match to Dalwallinu on April 13.

The reserves match was a see-sawing affair with both sides kicking a run of goals as momentum swung.

The Lions held a 2-goal lead at 3 quarter time which quickly disappeared when Dally kicked three quick goals at the start of the fourth to take the lead.

A strong mark and set shot goal in the last 40 seconds to Toodyay’s Luke Alexander put Toodyay back in front to win 61 to 59.

The league match was a tight contest with early goals hard to come by and at half time it was 4.7 to 4.2 in Toodyay’s favour.

As the match wore on Toodyay eventually got on top to grind out a 70 to 50 win.

At home on April 28, Toodyay made a statement, with league recording a 60 point win over Goomalling (137 to 77).

It was Toodyay’s first win over Goomalling since the 2019 premiership and was enjoyed by a big turnout of supporters at the lion den.

New recruit Shannon ‘Milky’ Lucassen ran riot in the forward 50m kicking 10
goals as a small forward.

The reserves lead from start to finish to record a 98 point 131 to 33 win.

Youngster Ben Corbey had a breakout game, kicking 7 goals.

The next home matches are May 5 v Calingiri, May 19 v Wongan Ballidu and May 26 v Dalwallinu.

Also remember to save the date for our upcoming combined premiership reunion function to be held on Saturday evening June 22 at the Toodyay oval.
